I have an Aunt with Dementia who is presently in a facility which I do not care much for. She is going thru her money and assets at a rapid pace due to the high cost of the facility, Drs, medicine (which is mostly prescribed and then thrown out) etc.
Is there some way she can get help from Medicare and move her assets in a legal manner. At the present time, I am her POA and still maintaining her home as well as paying all her bills and for the facility. At this rate, she will run out of money soon.
Can I get input on this from others in the same situation.
Anna
PS: It is nice to see a support site on here Sean!
I am worried about that too. Although mom is not there yet I can see that the cost of a nursing home or some place likke that would wipe her and me out. It was the fear of that problem that actually brogught me here to this site. Anna did you watch that video on the front page of this site? I have read a bunch here and it seems to be a manageable problem. As mom progresses I am goikng to do do something about it.Do you know this attorney Scott?
Hi Gregory, I have not been on my computer too much so did not see your post until now. I have not met Mr. Scott, however, I have spoken with his secretary and I am going to meet with an attorney somewhere to see what I can do. The cost of the nursing homes is unblievable. I have not watched the video but will now. What stage is your Mom in now. Is she staying with you? I would like to be able to care for my Aunt myself but right now she is in the hospital and she has dementia and diabetes so I am not sure if I can manage her here by myself. I wish the best for you. Hi Anna:
The task you are looking at with your aunt's situation can be overwhelming. Finding out what options are available legally, finacially, medically and personally can be accomplished in one visit to Sean. He can direct you thru the maze of "elder law", medicare vs. medicaid, placement issues, support groups and so much more.
I urge you to join a support group. These people have walked in your shoes and can give you advice on so many related items that you will come away with hope for the future.
I facilitate several groups in Pinellas..please let me know if you would like to attend a support group and i will let you know when they are held and the closest one for you.

Karen Can you please give me a phone number where I can contact you in reference to the Dementia support Group. Thanks
Hi Anna, Karen's groups are wonderful and I hope you have been able to attend. Not knowing where you live, if those groups are not close to you do know we have many others, like Karen's also sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association. You can call me at 727-578-2558 for a list or check our website at www.alz-tbc.org. I am so glad you found this site also. We hope to get more folks involved and have some great discussions.
