My wife has been under Dr care for 3 years, and is on Remynal, and Namenda. She had her ears checked in december and hearing in one ear good another down. In the last 4 days her hearing has almost disapeared. I have to almost yell at her to make her hear. Could this be another progression of her disease. another portion of her brain that is being effected. Thanks for your answer.

In Alzheimer's disease and similar illnesses, hearing problems can be confused with thinking problems. An audiologist and her physician should be consulted to correctly diagnose the problem. Hearing aids may be needed.

Some tips from Nancy Mace and Peter Rabins, authors of The 36-Hour Day (guide for caring for people with Alzheimer's disease):

You may try lowering your voice as high-frequency sounds are harder to hear.

Give her clues to where sounds are coming from. It can be hard to locate and identify sounds, and this may confuse her.

Use several clues at one time: point, speak, and gently guide her.

I hope this information is helpful to you: Please let me know how else I can help.
